U.S. Launches Online Passport Renewal Service
Americans can now renew their passports online, according to an announcement made on Wednesday by Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, Rena Bitter. The new service allows users to upload a photo, complete the application process entirely online, and avoid in-person visits or mailing documents. Available 24/7, the service applies to adults renewing a 10-year passport that expired within the last five years or will expire within the next year.
Accessible through travel.state.gov, the service will guide applicants to confirm eligibility. Initially limited to those with a U.S. address, it is expected to serve up to 5 million people annually, with plans to expand access in the future. Processing times remain six to eight weeks, the same as for mail-in renewals.
“This convenient option aims to offer Americans more flexibility,” Bitter added, noting the program has already received positive feedback during beta testing.
