Google to Introduce Mandatory Biometric Protection for Enhanced Data Security

Google is set to bolster Android's security by implementing a new feature similar to Apple’s Stolen Device Protection. This feature, called Identity Check, will require users to verify their identity using biometrics when attempting to unlock apps. The key twist is that biometrics will only be mandatory when the device is outside a trusted location.

The goal is to protect your data even if a thief knows your phone’s lock screen PIN. If someone sees your PIN and steals your phone, this feature will prevent them from accessing your apps and data.

Currently, many Android apps allow users to bypass biometric authentication by using the lock screen PIN as a fallback. However, Google is working on a system that removes this fallback option, ensuring biometrics are the only way to access apps when your phone is in an untrusted location.

This new feature was spotted in Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, where it was found under a string labeled “mandatory biometrics prompt description.” The system will monitor when your phone is outside trusted locations, such as your home, and activate mandatory biometrics to prevent unauthorized access.

Google is also updating its Trusted Places feature, which allows devices to remain unlocked in trusted locations. Once the phone is outside these trusted areas, the mandatory biometric option will be triggered, further securing your device from potential threats.

This update marks a significant step forward in Android's approach to protecting user data, especially against physical theft where lock screen PINs can be compromised.
